Precision Surgical Systems  Acrobot

Acrobot provides precision surgical systems for computer-assisted surgical navigation – with the ultimate aim of improving speed, accuracy and reproducibility.

Accurate component placement of the prosthesis is made possible via a computer-assisted system. This system uses patient CT scan data designed to ensure that the device is implanted in a precise and reproducible method, specific to each individual patient.

The process consists of four key stages:

  • Acrobot Modeller
Modelling software is used by the radiographer to create a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy from patient-specific CT scans.

  • Acrobot Planner
Planning software is used by the surgeon to plan the size and orientation of the implants pre-operatively.

  • Acrobot Navigator
Product specific navigation software is used along with the Acrobot Navigator to ensure precise implant positioning.

  • Acrobot Sculptor
Sculptor’s exciting technology enables the surgeon to decide where, when and how much bone to resect.

The combination of the surgeon’s experience, skill and judgement along with Acrobot’s patient-specific Modeller and Planner software enable a full 3D view of the true patient’s anatomy and the appropriate positioning of the implants, which can be visualised prior to the surgical procedure. As the patient’s plan is taken forward to the Acrobot Navigator, this provides improved accuracy of implant placement, allowing a level of precision not previously possible.

Acrobot Navigator is simple and ergonomic to use. Featuring two mechanical tracking arms – one is attached to the patient through the main incision via a simple bone interlock, and the second to various key implant specific surgical instruments. This allows the surgeon to prepare the bone for implant positioning as planned using the Acrobot Planner software. Unlike optical tracking systems, there are no line of sight issues and the surgical approach is in no way dictated by use of the system. Acrobot Navigator is housed within an unobtrusive trolley with a draped touch screen surgeon interface.

Acrobot Sculptor’s exciting technology enables the surgeon to decide where, when and how much bone to resect, with the added reassurance of Acrobot’s patented ‘Active Constraint’ robotic guidance. The patient plan is uploaded into Sculptor and using active constraint, a high speed burr allows precise targeted bone removal in a safe and controlled manner. The patient plan will calculate a volume of bone that needs to be removed to facilitate precise placement of the individual components of the implant. Sculptor then verifies that volume and creates a ‘no-fly zone’ outside it, meaning that the active constraint built into the system prevents incorrect removal of the bone.
