The Zenith Experience
13 October 2009
With live surgery, didactic lectures and demonstrations, this was the second Zenith instructional course held at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol. Following on from the success of earlier Zenith instructional and cadaveric courses, this international meeting was again led by Mr Ian Winson MB ChB, FRCS with support from faculty members Mr Stephen Parsons FRCS, Royal Cornwall Hospital and Mr Shashi Garg FRCS, Westmoreland Hospital.
Held again at Bristol’s Avon Orthopaedic Centre at Southmead Hospital, the one-day course was based on a tried and tested programme of earlier meetings. Comprising two live surgical cases, didactic lectures and demonstrations, the course focused on the sometimes controversial, but increasingly popular subject of total ankle replacement and the surgical procedures involved. An opportunity for hands-on experience was also included towards the end of the day, with delegates implanting their own Zenith in a series of dry bone workshops.
Mr Ian Winson, MB ChB, FRCS, is a NHS Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital. A practising orthopaedic consultant for 19 years, he is a specialist in foot and ankle surgery, knee surgery and sports injuries. The Zenith TAR system is the result of a collaboration between Mr Winson and Corin Group to design an effective and innovative ankle replacement implant with modern, accurate and logical instrumentation.
He was the recent president of the European Foot and Ankle Society and a past president of the British Orthopaedic Foot Surgery Society. He is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, a member of the Council of the European Foot and Ankle Society, an international member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and a member of the International Foot and Ankle Society.
