The Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (PEOC) is proud of its international reputation for clinical excellence and innovation in the specialist fields of orthopaedics and rheumatology, it provides specialist emergency trauma care and planned treatment for patients with medical conditions affecting their health and wellbeing. The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital is renowned globally as a centre of excellence for hip and knee arthroplasty and is also used for clinical training of medical students from the Peninsula Medical School which is maintained by the University of Plymouth and the new University of Exeter which took its first students in 2013.

Mr Keith Eyres has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Exeter since 1996 and is currently practicing in the Royal Devon and NHS Foundation Trust and Nuffield Health Exeter. After graduating from Charing Cross Medical School in 1983, Mr Eyres practiced in Yorkshire and New Zealand and excelled as a limb reconstruction surgeon publishing over 70 original articles. Mr Eyres introduced the concept of knee surgery without tourniquet to the surgical world as a way to enhance patient recovery and reduce potential complications which has now developed into a surgical technique for knee replacement. Alongside primary and complex knee surgery, Mr Eyres also provides care for primary and revision hip surgery, complex foot and ankle problems and elbow and wrist injuries.

Mr Vipul Mandalia obtained his orthopaedic training with the Wessex Deanery, developing an interest in knee surgery early in his career derived from working with renowned knee surgeons. He obtained his Fellowship training in knee surgery at leading centres in the UK and the USA. Mr Mandalia is the research lead at PEOC, has a strong research background and has authored a large number of peer review publications, review articles and a book chapter. His research area not only includes the clinical outcomes of various surgical treatments but also the cellular and molecular effect of various treatment modalities on the knee joint. He has lectured and presented his research in national and international orthopaedic meetings and has won awards and prizes.

MB ChB FRCS (Ed) MSc Eng FRCS (Tr & Orth)


Mr Andrew Toms has been a Senior Knee Consultant at the Exeter Knee Clinic since 2005. Graduating from the Birmingham University Medical School he was awarded the Sir John Lewis prize for medicine. Mr Toms now specialises in surgery of the knee including sports injuries, complex primary and revision knee surgery as well as maintaining an ongoing commitment to the field of trauma and primary hip surgery. Since his appointment at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre Mr Toms has helped form the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit, is their hospital lead as well as Knee Unit Co-ordinator.
